Partly sunny and pleasant today with highs of 65 to 70. Tonight clouds increase and a chance of rain develops late today or Sunday. Lows around 45 to 50, Sunday highs in the upper 60s to low 70s.
Former Democratic Lt. Gov Henry Howell says the 1981 Virginia governor race is a Tweedledum Tweedledee contest likely to favor Democrat Charles Robb. He noted voters confuse party lines and expect the grandparent vote, speaking after attending a legal seminar in the State Capitol press room.
University of Colorado biochemistry professor Dr. Peter Albersheim will speak at James Madison University on Thursday about An Odyssey in the World of Plant Science A Search for Improvement in Agriculture. The 4 30 p m talk will be in Miller Hall Room 101.
Republican Marshall Coleman challenged Democrat Chuck Robb to spell out how he would avoid tax increases. Coleman argued Robb should reveal a plan to prevent revenue shortfalls, while Robb warned against pledges to veto taxes and said some increases might be needed if federal cuts create a $1.5 billion gap. The debate included Robb’s jab about Pinocchio and Coleman’s defense of his campaign tactics.
In Newport News Robb praised his debate showing but lamented unanswered charges. Coleman criticized Robb while labor groups remained undecided at the shipyard gate as workers and officials interacted with Robb and allies. Robb cited his tax and highway plans and defended his stance amid endorsements questions.
