Local historians correct Rockingham County's birth year from 1777 to 1778 after Virginia records show the official creation date as March 1 1778. The 1952 175th anniversary celebration was based on the mistaken 1777 date.
In Rockingham county the 175th anniversary events were held yesterday in the Circuit Court room. Historian Dr John Wayland explained a prepared map showing original boundary lines of Rockingham and neighboring counties. Souvenir programs include Wayland article on Shenandoah Valley counties founding and a map copy. Rockingham was created by a Virginia General Assembly act in October 1777, carved from Augusta.
