The Alton Telegraph faces a 9.2 million libel judgment, the second largest in U.S. history, with seven related suits seeking 73 million. Editor Stephen Cousley says the paper is under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection to survive. The case centers on a 1969 memo not published, linked to builder James Green and a labor racketeering inquiry, with trial verdict for Green after 26 days of testimony.
In a future about 100 million years hence a day on Earth will run about thirty minutes longer as tidal friction slows Earth's rotation slightly each century. The gradual slowdown lengthens days as the planet spins beneath tidal bulges.

Beiruit AP report says Iran executed 82 leftists including key Mujahedeen Khalq leaders in Tehran and four other cities on charges of anti regime activity. The tally brings total executions since June 22 to 1,328. Rajavi claims nearly 100 supporters were dragged from hospitals and killed.
Ohio steelworkers vote against a concession package for a proposed 500 million Timken steel mill in Canton by 671 to 617. Overall concessions favored 722 to 727, with turnout around 22 percent among eligible Canton workers. Timken eyed sites in Tennessee and Kentucky if rejected, planned 800 jobs for the 1985 start and produced alloy steel for bearings and drill bits.
