Volunteers assist Virginia State Parks to stay open through fall reducing a projected deficit. About 123 volunteers will help maintain picnic areas trails and campgrounds, saving roughly $110,000 and allowing parks to remain partly open until late fall or November 30. Colleges Ferrum and Dabney Lancaster join the effort with trained volunteers.
ROANOKE AP There has been sixfold growth in tax exempt industrial revenue bonds since 1975 according to Edward Pettigrew Jr of Horner Barksdale and Co at the Virginia Municipal Finance Officers Association conference. He notes they may affect federal tax revenues and municipal bond markets while providing below market rates to businesses via industrial development authorities. Pettigrew predicts demand could rise with federal budget cuts and reduced loan aid.
Dennis Martz was elected president of the Tenth Legion Mountain Valley Raritan Club. New officers include Sonny Derrow as vice president Doug Propst as secretary Winston McDonaldson as treasurer and Ray Bentch as director. The group planned its Oct 24 turkey oyster supper and Friday shooting matches at 7 30 p.m.
The Army Corps of Engineers boosted flow from Bath County dam to fivefold to flush algae from the James River and avert tainted water for Richmond and Henrico County. Operations run 14 days, with Lake Moomaw water added. full effect expected in two weeks. National Guard units prepped water tanks at fire stations across Henrico and Richmond to supply the public.
