NORFOLK AP The Barrys sale of land on the Currituck Outer Banks ends a dispute over beach driving in Back Bay Refuge. Barry faced scrutiny for five trips from Virginia Beach to Currituck claiming official business. He says he sold the property and will not return.
Police officer K E Teller chasing a shooting suspect stumbled into a 20 by 20 foot patch housing about 90 home grown marijuana plants, fenced and ivy screened, described as a redwood forest. Henry Parker Jr. 55 was arrested for possession with intent to distribute and manufacture marijuana. The 50 pound haul valued at over 30000 dollars.
Tidewater fuel oil dealers urge repeal of the 1 percent home heating oil tax to stay competitive with Chesapeake firms. Norfolk, Virginia Beach and Portsmouth could lose hundreds of thousands yearly if the tax remains, while Chesapeake would also face revenue declines. Local leaders weigh repeal to prevent dealers relocating.

A daughter was born Sept 24 to Mr and Mrs Jeffrey Huffman of Rt 3 Elkton at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. The hospital listing failed to include the announcement. The mother's name Wanda May is corrected for Diane Lynn Dispanet. A prior engagement notice in Tuesday's News Record misread a name.
Curtis Martin of Unicolor will demonstrate home color printing at the Harrisonburg Rockingham Camera Club meeting. The session starts 7 p.m. Thursday at the Rockingham Public Library and is open to all interested observers.
Gloucester County supervisors and the Virginia Independence Bicentennial Commission settled a dispute over shuttle funding for the Yorktown Bicentennial celebration beginning Oct 16. The commission will pay Newton's Bus Co. $5,000 for daily shuttle service between Yorktown and Gloucester Point during the four day event, after threats to halt buses.
