A band of showers is predicted today from Texas and Oklahoma extending east and north to Tennessee and Alabama. Rain is expected across parts of the region with varying intensity and potential for brief storms in eastern areas.
Partly sunny today with scattered late thunderstorms and highs in the low to mid 80s. Clearing tonight with lows in the low to mid 50s. Mostly sunny Wednesday with highs in the upper 60s to low 70s.
A draft presidential order would allow the CIA to infiltrate domestic groups with the attorney general's approval, potentially covertly influence their activities. It would replace Carter era guidelines and retain bans on assassinations and domestic electronic surveillance, while expanding certain covert actions subject to presidential powers and laws.
The prime lending rate fell to 19 percent from 19.5 amid a weakening economy. U.S. automakers report sluggish September sales, with Ford showing strength while overall demand for credit and housing grows weak. Construction, home financing suffer as interest costs rise and production data hint at slower momentum.
In Richmond, Sen Adelard Brault questioned the legislature's watchdog role over state agency rules. The Senate Education and Health Committee deferred the State Board of Health private wells and septic regulations from December 1 to March 13, citing complexity and cost concerns. Chief critic Sen Virgil Goode argued extra costs burden homeowners and builders. Health Commissioner Kenley urged enactment, noting three years of work. Some members warned the oversight may swell future legislative workload.
The Rev Eugene Diener of Harrisonburg performed the wedding ceremony for Mr and Mrs Mark Ray Andrews on September 26. His name was omitted from the wedding announcement in Saturday's News Record.
In Virginia, Democrat Richard Davis and Republican Nathan Miller each raised about 126 thousand dollars through Sept 29 for lieutenant governor bids. Durrette led Baliles 2 to 1 in attorney general financing with Durrette at 340,866 raised and 316,656 spent. Davis loaned 50 thousand. Miller loaned 31 thousand. Davis's funds largely from Tidewater businesses and unions. Miller benefited from a 20 thousand GOP National Committee contribution. Baliles reported 178,306 in contributions and 5 thousand loan with 136,964 in expenses.
