A regional forecast page lists expected high temperatures for eight p.m. EDT Friday across several cities. Readings vary by locale with expected warm air pushing late-October highs into the upper 60s to mid 70s Fahrenheit.
The Valley forecast calls for mostly sunny skies today with highs in the low to mid 70s and mostly sunny conditions again Saturday. Tonight will be partly cloudy with lows in the mid 50s to around 60. Rain is unlikely this week though a light shower cannot be ruled out Thursday with a 0.01 inch risk.

Massachusetts imposes a six year spending cap on hospitals to curb costly care. The plan aims to reduce annual growth by about 1 percent and total costs by 7.5 percent over six years. Hospitals may trim staff and services, merging or folding as budgets are enforced by Blue Cross and state authorities.
The Associated Press reports Virginia climatologists predict a colder than normal 1982-83 winter. Dr. Patrick Michaels says it will be colder than most 20th century winters, with variation by elevation and coastal distance. Bruce Hayden notes fall and early winter should also run cooler.
The National Weather Service’ s three month outlook predicts below normal temperatures from the Rocky Mountains to the Appalachians with above normal readings in peninsular Florida and the far west. Iowa Missouri and Illinois face the strongest chances of colder than normal weather while the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley also trend cooler. Normal winter temps vary from the low 40s in eastern Tidewater Virginia to the upper 20s in western mountains. Snowfall is expected to be near or above normal, with more snow anticipated than last year in many areas.
Newport News police say a woman tied to a Revco Drug store robbery on Jefferson Avenue shot herself after police blocked her escape in a pursuit involving an Independent Cab Co. taxi. She died from a chest wound as officers found her in the taxi.
Federal agents raided six starch blocker manufacturers and distributors in five states, seizing pills valued at 481000 dollars after the FDA ordered halt to traffic in the weight loss products. Most producers complied, while some contest the classification as drugs requiring approval.
The Junior Woman's Club sponsored bike rodeo will be held 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday on the Water Street parking deck upper level. A club spokesman says the earlier start time in Thursday's Daily News-Record was incorrect.
