Roanoke Democratic attorney general candidate Gerald Baliles urged bipartisan ticket debates among the six statewide contenders. He proposed Roanoke and Norfolk as televised sites to let voters compare the governor and attorney general teams, with questions from the media. GOP and other candidates welcomed joint appearances, though Robb had previously refused a Washington joint event.
Three Shenandoah Valley residents earned Army ROTC scholarships at James Madison University. Fifteen two year and five three year scholarships were granted. Recipients include Lois A. Arndt and Julie K. Simon of Harrisonburg and Glen R. Boykin Jr. of Elkton.
An interim bill of 179392 to private law firm McGuire Woods Battle for redistricting defense through July 31 was submitted to the state Board of Elections. The bill covers seven lawyers and support costs, drawing criticism over taxpayer expense and the Governor race context with Coleman, Robb, and Dalton named.
Republican lieutenant governor candidate Nathan Miller proposed a bipartisan independent commission to redraw state legislative district boundaries. Speaking in Arlington, Miller criticized the Democratic majority for a plan he says protects incumbents and lacks constitutional scrutiny. He cited 18 meetings since adjournment and costs over 262000, arguing for one person one vote and better community interests. The plan would keep congressional maps with the General Assembly.
