Charles S Robb suggested delaying to allow more of his appointees on the board. Closed interviews with Hamel and two finalists Donald E. Puryear and Jomas Hockaday were set for the morning.
Abingdon Virginia AP report notes theologian Norman Geissler defends Bible classes for fourth and fifth graders as comparable to nursery rhymes and Star Wars. The Bristol School Board case, brought by Sam and Sally Crockett, challenges constitutionality after 42 years of teaching. Trial adjourns as witnesses discuss indoctrination, religious teaching, and separation of church and state.
In Roanoke AP report, Orion A. Templeton, head of Marvin C. Templeton & Sons, fights charges of bid rigging on Virginia state highway projects from 1977 to 1979. He testified a prosecution witness lied about coordinating noncompetitive bids and subcontracting. Templeton said bids reflected expected full work and bulk purchases to cut costs, earning 3 to 4 percent profit.
