GIs of the 1st Cavalry Division rushed to evacuate Firebase Bronco near Cambodia as enemy mortars hit and a helicopter hoisted troops. Several men fell from the moving craft during loading while others dismantled bunkers at Fire Support Base Speer before the midnight deadline for the Cambodia operation.
Rockingham County supervisors call a 7 p.m. briefing with Harrisonburg City Council and Bridgewater Dayton and Mt. Crawford to discuss a 4.6 million sewage grant. State Water Control Board funded the regional project and political bodies must form an authority and decide financing and rates by Sept. 1.
A federal grand jury in Jackson, Mississippi was urged to consider outside influences in the May 15 violence at Jackson State College that left two students dead. Judge Cox warned against crossing state lines to incite riot and said witnesses would be kept secret as the panel aims to finish its probe this week.

Britain orders 500 more troops to Northern Ireland bringing peacekeeping forces to about 11 000 as six die in weekend clashes and a broader political crisis unfolds with leaders from Ireland and Britain rushing to crisis talks.
Tens of thousands of Italian-Americans gathered in Columbus Circle in a unity demonstration against FBI actions. Speaker Rep. Mario Biaggi said 22 million Italians include only about 5,000 involved in organized crime. The march toward FBI headquarters led to scuffles, arrests, and two stabbed officers.

The Commission ruled that the Navajos may be owed compensation for up to about 30 million acres of aboriginal land in Arizona and New Mexico, far larger than the 8 million acre reservation, with detailed hearings to fix the exact acreage and value as of 1868. Related Hopi claims also acknowledged for up to 5 million acres, with further hearings to determine exact payments due and dates.
