The Valley forecast calls for variable cloudiness with a chance of showers today and highs near the upper seventies. Tonight will be partly cloudy with lows around the upper fifties, and Sunday should be partly sunny with highs in the upper seventies to low eighties. The Supreme Court with a 6-3 vote upheld a Civil War era $10 cap on lawyers fees for veterans seeking service connected benefits from the VA. The ruling says lawyers should not be paid if veterans win, and may affect about 28 million eligible veterans and roughly 30,000 disputed claims yearly. Justice Stevens dissented, urging protection of individual liberty and access to legal aid in complex cases.
The GAO report says U.S. spy agencies recruited Nazi war criminals after WWII to study the Soviet Union and helped some illegally immigrate. It cites Klaus Barbie, protected from extradition and escaped to South America, and notes five assisted aliens with troubling backgrounds among 114 studied. The findings challenge claims no aid was given to war criminals.
In Hampton Virginia two men forced entry into the Bon Supermarket after hours and shot the owner Clyde Jenkins 72 and employee Mohammad Afifi 42 during an attempted robbery. Afifi died at Hampton General Hospital and Jenkins remained in critical condition. Police report four to six shots were fired as the robbers fled.
West Virginia chief justice Richard Neely steps down from the post after public outrage over firing Tess Dineen for refusing to baby-sit his son. He keeps a seat on the Supreme Court and may return the job, while NOW demands his full resignation. Investigations continue into the controversy as Neely defends staff duties.
