Hundreds of residents across Rockingham County pledged War Savings Stamps on Pledge Day. The drive, intended to support Uncle Sam with safe investments, saw strong participation in Harrisonburg and surrounding towns, with plans to continue contributions through the year and exceed expectations.
George Scott, a delivery driver for J. R. Campbell, narrowly escaped death yesterday morning on Dayton Pike when his car lost control and rolled. He suffered a broken collarbone and several bruises as the vehicle demolished its body and lay in a ditch with the motor still running.
The Rockingham Fair Association announces exhibitors of machinery may display their exhibits on the fair grounds before opening day without extra charge by applying to secretary Andrew Bell.
Mrs Luther Roller, who had a serious operation at Rockingham Memorial Hospital last Wednesday, is resting well. Nurses and the physician report her condition as satisfactory as could be expected.
The Daily News Record notes a Red Cross lawn festival set for Saturday June 29 at Bridgewater. Proceeds support Red Cross relief efforts and community volunteers.
A Sunday night program by Linville community girls at the Christian Church features songs recitations and a Red Cross benefit collection. Performances include Star Spangled Banner Carry Me Back to Ole Virginia America and The Battle Hymn of the Republic with several readings about the flag and the Red Cross.
Next week is Patriot Week at the State Normal School with daily attractions culminating in the Fourth of July Pageant. The pageant will depict issues related to winning the World War and educate while entertaining. Over five hundred people from town and county attended last year, and officials expect broad attendance again this year. Everybody is invited to attend and enjoy the evening.
Lorena Wampler an eighteen months old child of Mr and Mrs H B Wampler of Weyers Cave died from blood poisoning caused by burns from stepping into ashes where trash had been burned in a chicken yard The funeral is set for Sunday at 11 AM at Pleasant Valley Church of the Brethren with Rev John J Click of Dayton officiating Pallbearers include Ofiases Vir gie Wilda Hinegardner Margaret Carpenter and Lottie Miller and six young girls will bear the flowers
At a Monday evening gathering at 7 30 o clock merchants of the town and county are urged to attend. James C Johnston local Food Administrator will explain the sugar situation allotment application and certificate handling. A representative from every store handling food should be present.

A small advisory group will advise but avoid military force to prevent German interference while restoring economic order.
Funeral services for W. R. Fallis who died Thursday morning will be held today near Hinton at o clock conducted by Rev. 5 B Hannah of Cooks Creek Presbyterian Church. Interment in Woodbine cemetery. In Paris the Chamber of Deputies announced that the Fourth of July will be regarded as a legal French holiday. Cheers followed as all party lines were wiped out and the announcement drew unanimous applause from across the chamber.

It was learned yesterday that the National Hotel once owned by the RoudaLash family is now owned by J. M. Kavanaugh. The sale occurred in recent days and the exact price is not confirmed though it is believed to be well below cost, possibly half the construction price of about 250 dollars.

A license was issued yesterday in the Clerks Office for the marriage of Miss Effie D Huffman daughter of Dock Huffman and Clarence M Shiftlett son of Mr and Mrs B Shiftlett all of near Linville. The wedding will take place today.
