A Valley forecast notes considerable cloudiness with occasional showers and thunderstorms likely and a high near 80. Showers and thunderstorms may linger tonight with lows in the low to mid 60s. Wednesday brings variable clouds with a chance of showers and highs in the mid 70s to around 80.

Glenn Haslam Barker testified he left 12 year old Katie Worsky asleep with her girlfriend Tammy Thomas the night she vanished and later helped search for her. He said he returned July 12 after a call from Tammy Thomas’s mother and cooperated with police. The body was never found and Barker faces murder charges.
Virginia Beach AP The state highway department and developer David I Levine settle a six month dispute over Great Neck Road. The state will pay 1.35 million for seven acres of right of way enabling a 2.2 mile four lane project ahead of a six lane expansion. Construction aimed to ease congestion on the 19 000 vehicles per day route. Levine resists the terms but says he had no choice and notes he intended a resort residential project for years. The injunction blocking condemnation was lifted after four months of negotiations.
A two pound premature girl was born at Rockingham Memorial Hospital thirty five years ago and incorrectly labeled as a boy in Skyline's June 24 Yesteryear section. The Bowman family names were misstated. parents are Mr. and Mrs. George J. Bowman Jr.
In Abingdon Virginia US District Court heard Luella Steppe a former Bristol teacher defend the Bible classes as non doctrinal while acknowledging teaching the Bible page by page The suit by Sam and Sally Crockett challenges the programs constitutional separation of church and state The program run by Bible Teaching in Public Schools has raised funds to defend officials and aims to teach a study of the Bible within constitutional guidelines
U S Rep Harley Staggers Jr of West Virginia criticized President Reagan for not pursuing a genuine arms control pact with the Soviet Union. He urged Congress to act independently to build a comprehensive defense program while stressing the budget and human life costs of large scale defense spending.
A Marine A-6 Intruder on a low level training flight from Andrews AFB crashed near Emporia Greensville County eight miles southeast of town. One Marine flier died, the other was found alive and in stable condition at Norfolk Navy Regional Medical Center. Names withheld pending family notification.
