San Francisco reports a stormy Democratic national convention ahead with clashes on prohibition the league of nations and the Irish question. Bryan pushes for a reserved league stance while administration forces favor a league without destructive reservations. Cox Palmer and McAdoo vie for ballots as anti saloon league opposition and field dynamics shape the early delegate battles.
San Francisco June 26 The fight against Senator Glass of Virginia the administration choice for chairman of the relations committee drew attention at convention. Administration leaders predicted a sound outcome while opponents predicted a real struggle. Senator Walsh of Montana who opposed Wilson on the peace treaty vote with Republican reservations was urged as the anti Glass candidate by Western delegates. The Walsh faction operated discreetly, not naming supporters.
Isaac Freeland, famed for elopement with Miss Daphna Donivan of Lacey Spring, is jailed after a Saturday arrest for cashing a forged $10 check drawn on Rockingham National Bank in Harrisonburg. The case involves alleged involvement in the elopement. Freeland’s bail may be sought today. Frank C. Stipes is his attorney.

One thousand general chairmen of the four railroad brotherhoods will meet in Chicago on July 19 to pass judgement on wage awards set by the Railroad Labor Board, with decisions due not later than July 20. W. G. Lee, president of the Order of Trainmen, is quoted.

Washington reports some Republican leaders push for a swing around the circle with stops in major western cities to connect with voters. Harding plans mostly to stay at Marion Ohio home speaking to visiting delegations with brief trips to nearby cities. He and Mrs. Harding are staying with Senator Frelinghuysen in New Jersey and will return to Marion after a busy week in Washington. An Americanization speech is planned for a phonograph release in July.
A Buick six roadster carrying three Baltimore traveling salesmen crashed into a large tree near a Mt. Sidney spring around 5 am. All occupants escaped with minor scratches. J. H. Harrington driver and R. B. Watson were unconscious briefly. George Bland escaped injury. They were fined for reckless driving and later treated by Dr. Firebaugh.
Special services marked the one hundredth anniversary of Mt Hebron United Brethren Church formerly Whitesel s Church. An all day program featured a basket dinner on the lawn and an anniversary sermon by Rev D F Glovier of Verona.
Mr. Alfred Ney of Jos. Ney & Sons departed yesterday for a business trip to New York City.
A plane set an American non stop speed record flying 1400 miles in 11 hours from Omaha to New York. Fog and side winds slowed the trip and 200 miles were lost when the pilot became confused in fog, but the flight remains the longest non stop journey recorded in the nation.
Washington reports a manifesto signed by ten generals and fifty officers plus civilians praising Francisco Villa and denouncing the Agua Prieta plan. It urges democracy and accuses Obregonists of demanding Villa's retirement to private life and a Sonora confinement until after the election.
One hundred and four applicants passed the state bar examinations held in Roanoke last Tuesday and Wednesday. The list includes graduates from Washington & Lee, University of Virginia, and Richmond University. Valley men named as passing include Russel T. Bradford, Cecil B. Collins, L. Berkley Cox, Thomas J. Michie Jr, Stuart Moore, P. A. McDaniel, J. E. Parrott, Matthew W. Paxton Jr, Fred T. Deaver, Sheff L. Devi r, Glenn M. Ruebush, and others.
In Macon Georgia on June 27 G Creason a 28 year old blind man shot and killed his wife. A four year old child witnessed the event. Creason fired five shots and reloaded his pistol claiming he intended to drive away two men he ordered from the home and did not realize he had struck his wife. The Creasons had lived in Macon for five years having moved from Ware Shoals South Carolina.
Senator Carter Glass predicts McAdoo would win the nomination on the fifth or sixth ballot after a Chicago Harris on Smith ticket discussion stirs Illinois Democrats. Mrs Antoinette Funk asserts the forecast as authoritative. Palmer and Cox show limited influence as Fred Harrison's backers push a potential Bryan aligned ticket.
The Democratic National Committee refused to seat Senator James A Reed and backed the Palmer group of Georgia delegates. The vote to seat the Georgia Palmer delegates was 49 to 0 with four absent, while Reed was rejected 34 to 12 after a public hearing and closed sessions. Clark Howell was reelected to the national committee as his Georgia delegates named him.
Dr. W F Watson former pastor of Harrisonburg Baptist Church suffered a severe stroke near noon yesterday and is in serious condition. His daughter at the Normal School will go to his bedside. Known for his role in funding the new church building, he earlier had a mild stroke two years ago and has lived in Alexandria since. He was visiting a son in Leesburg when stricken.
