Study Warns Staph Superbug Hospital Infection Rates Rise
A national survey estimates Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus infects or colonizes about 46 of every 1,000 hospital and nursing home patients. The finding, drawn from 1,237 facilities, suggests as many as 30,000 U.S. hospital patients may harbor the superbug at any given time, far higher than prior estimates.
Study finds most hospital infections stem from prior stays or community exposure
Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology reports that about 34 per 1,000 patients acquire a skin or blood infection, while 12 per 1,000 are colonized with a super bug on admission. Researchers led by Dr. William Jarvis say roughly 75 percent entered hospitals already carrying the organism, suggesting prior stays or community exposure. Prevention centers on hand washing, equipment cleaning, gloves, gowns, and isolating infected patients. The findings were presented at the APIC annual meeting in San Jose, California, not yet submitted to a peer reviewed journal.
