In northern Virginia the Virginia Electric & Power Co. agreed to reroute a planned high voltage line to skirt most estates northward after objections from wealthy landowners. The move followed neighbors in hunt country voicing opposition to the original corridor.
Gilbert E. Miller and Commonwealth's Attorney James R. Sipe presented a Board of Supervisors protest to the State Corporation Commission in Richmond. Vepco agreed to change the route in Northern Virginia, but no plan changes were announced for the Valley leg between Mt. Storm West Virginia and Waynesboro.
Citizens along the proposed route object to steel towers disturbing the horse and fox hunting country. They organize unusually to challenge the utility before the State Corporation Commission as Vepco seeks a pioneering 500000-volt transmission line from West Virginia coal fields, with rerouting under consideration.
J. Wilson Lee of Edom was named Monday as Linville district member of the Rockingham County School Board to succeed Frank Coffman on July 1. Lee is secretary treasurer of Whitesel Brothers Inc. and a Linville Edom high school graduate. The Electoral Board’s selection included Dr. George Row, R. J. May, and D. C. Stickley. Other board members are Carl D. Showalter, Dr. Harry Jopson, T. L. Evans, Page Price, and Forrest Hills.

The IRS issued final rules on expense account deductions for entertaining customers with only minor loosening. Rules take effect Jan 1 with July 31 compliance deadline. new records required to justify deductions. A change broadens business use for yachts or hunting lodges and allows deductions for business meals even without immediate business benefit. Commissioner Caplin says the rules curb abuse while preserving legitimate deductions.
Madison College launched the summer term with 1100 students registered, 100 above last year and expected to exceed 1200 when the six week graduate and science institute sessions begin July 8. The program runs through August 16 and includes two three week courses in social science and industrial geography for teachers and students.
The Rockingham Board of Supervisors asked the State Highway Department to study the Wayland Highway between Harrisonburg and Grottoes to improve the busy route. The request came from the Chamber of Commerce highway committee and area residents who said the road should be upgraded as a secondary road due to traffic and new homes. The panel backed a five point program for primary road improvements, though High Street Va. 42 was excluded as it falls under urban funding.
