Sunday Crash Fatal To Grottoes Youth
An early Sunday head on collision on Wa. Rt. 865 near Mill Creek Church killed Kenneth Atkins 18 of Grottoes and injured four others. Atkins was pronounced dead at Rockingham Memorial Hospital, the county's eighth traffic fatality of the year. The injured include Stewart Weaver 18, Walter Morris 18, Darriy Baker 21, and Kyle Chestnut 21, with varying injuries and conditions. State Trooper J R Failes said two vehicles were traveling toward Port Republic and toward Harrisonburg when they collided about 12 15 a m, the impact tossing at least one occupant from a vehicle.

Massanetta Springs hosted a large concert weekend with over 2100 attendees to hear Massanetta Chorus, Shenandoah Chorus, and an 80 piece orchestra. Director C J Hesch led the 24th annual session with record enrollments. Notable performers included Warner M Chance Walter E Reitz and Roger Wagner who conducted the festival.

Glen K. Shomo Jr. was elected treasurer of the Virginia State Exchange Clubs at the Richmond convention. He previously served on the state board of control for two years and is a former district governor and Harrisonburg Exchange Club president. Raymond T. General locomotive tour draws thousands at regional terminal
The General steam locomotive attracted over 3000 visitors across two days at the Chesapeake Western terminal. About 2100 rode the coach and museum, with as many as 184 on a single trip, as Judge Hamilton Haas and others planned a Luray stop after Elkton. The engine, famed from the Civil War, departed for Elkton after a successful reception and diesel oil adjustment. It schedules 8:00 a.m. Harrisonburg departure and 12:41 p.m. Front Royal display before Tuesday ends. The tour continues toward Hagerstown and Gettysburg for the 100th anniversary observance.
