Sheriff D. E. Croushorn probes public records to identify men aged 21 to 31 who failed to register for military duty. Using school reports marriage records liquor records and affidavits, he will cross check ages and catch evasions. Those evading registration face up to one year in jail and forced service.

Captain Marshal Milton of Roanoke oversaw seven Harrisonburg men joining the Fourth Virginia Coast Artillery. The unit, expected to muster for Federal service around July 15, will train at Fort Monroe Virginia. Recruits from Harrisonburg include William Byrd Brent Friddle Mark Zirkle FE. H. Rinker B. G. Barnes P. H. Baugher and Leon W. Smith. Milton also recruited eleven in Winchester and Berryville and moved on to Staunton and Lexington. The company now numbers eighty seven men, close to full war strength with twenty two more needed.
Robert Franklin Nair a Rockingham resident died at his home south of Broadway after months of declining health. Born March 14 1849 in Highland County he moved to Rockingham fifty years ago and lived there until death. He was married three times and had twenty children, seventeen living. Survivors include four sons Arch Thomas Benjamin Roy and Ward plus several daughters and two brothers. Funeral plans pending with Rev Carson Miller conducting services.
Washington reports Liberty loan subscriptions reached 3 026 236 850 with over four million buyers. New York district led with 1 186 780 400 while other districts including Boston Cleveland Philadelphia San Francisco and Chicago contributed sizable totals. Allotments will be set by tiered percentages up to ten thousand dollars and above.
Major Joseph W. Baugher post master at Beldor and Confederate veteran died yesterday morning at his home after a long illness from tuberculosis. He was about seventy five and served under Colonel Charles T. O Farrell during the Civil War. He is survived by his wife Miss Julia long and one daughter Mrs. Alfred T. Powell. Funeral services will be held at 2 pm this Saturday from the Baugher home and interment will be in Long Cemetery near Beldor.

Mrs Nancy A Sill Ing Neff widow of Josiah Neff died at 10 48 last night at her son Crawford Neff home near Tide Springs after a long illness. Surviving are her son Crawford and sisters Mrs Kate Propst Mount Solon and Mrs Letitia Beard Raphine. Funeral Sunday 11 from Lindale Mennonite Church with interment in Myers cemetery on the Neff farm.

Leon Shiffiett, fifteen month old son of Mr and Mrs Albert Shiffiett, died at 3 30 yesterday at the family home near Elkton after a ten day illness. He is survived by his parents a sister and two brothers. Burial is planned for this Saturday afternoon in Elk Run Cemetery.
The National City Bank of New York reports U S exports of horses and mules during World War I total about 920000 horses and 320000 mules from August 1914 through mid 1916. Horses valued at about 194 million dollars and mules at 66 million. Yearly exports rose from 275000 in year one to about 470000 in year two and near 460000 in year three ending next month.
