Boyd F. Sherman a retired farmer of Mathias West Virginia died Wednesday afternoon at Rockingham Memorial Hospital after a week as a patient. His body is at Rhodes Funeral Home Broadway pending funeral arrangements.

Elkton Couple Awarded 12603 in Road-Use Case
In Rockingham Circuit Court on Wednesday the Clark family of Elkton area received 12603 for a 1.09 acre parcel taken for US 33 in 1969 plus 10750 for damages to their remaining five acres. They had asked 16000 and charged the easement worsened driveway slope and winter ice.

Houston Retires From SS Office in Staunton
Joseph W. Houston, district manager of the Staunton Social Security office since 1948, will retire July 1 after 38 years of federal service. The office now has 13 staff serving four counties with 22,298 beneficiaries and $250,000 monthly benefits, up from earlier staffing and geographic reach, as Medicare and disability programs expanded. Bruce A. Hundley will oversee the office until a successor is named.

A federal court jury in Jacksonville acquitted Bobby Wayne Wallace of air piracy and three lesser counts linked to a Tennessee to Florida charter plane hijacking that caused three deaths. Madison College Names Director for New Marching Band
Malcolm B. Harris was appointed director of Madison College's first marching band with a goal of 80 members this summer.
