National Guards to Camp at Shenandoah Caverns

Major Walter W. Burns and Captain Leroy S. Mann of the 260th Company Coast Artillery DC National Guard left Shenandoah Caverns after arranging a July 6 and 7 encampment for about 300 guardsmen. The camp marks the first DC Guards training in the Shenandoah Valley with anti aircraft guns searchlights and artillery. The Caverns site offers accessibility and panoramic Valley views from Caverns Hill.

Synthetic rubber tires perfected by Du Ponts

Du Pont and Dayton Rubber Manufacturing announce American synthetic automobile tires that resemble real rubber and wear like it. Mayor Koontz Dies at Shenandoah After 25 Years in Office

Ancient Sandstone Blocks Found During Harrisonburg Dam Work

Geologists report sandstone blocks uncovered in the Dry River Valley during a city dam project near Harrisonburg date to about 200 million years ago. Dr Butts explains the formations formed from tree trunks and sand in ancient ground as the Appalachians rose, with blocks resembling round butcher’s blocks and other rocks also discovered. Penn may acquire nine toll bridges

Harrisburg news reports that Samuel 8. Lewis, Pennsylvania highways secretary, said the state expects to acquire nine toll bridges once a price survey is completed. Tolls will be charged until costs are retired, after which the bridges become free. Acquisition is under a constitutional amendment and $10 million appropriation.

Old Sol blazed on the longest day with a high of 90 degrees, just below Wednesday. Wheat fields showed activity countywide while little rain from Tuesday lingered. The low was 59, and a warm night unsettled sleepers. The Weather Man forecast possible thundershowers today as daylight lasted 14 hours 49 minutes. Richmond Car Works lands 500 steel car order

Lynch Mob Calls Texas Man Aboard Car In Public Lynching

In Kirbyville a 30-year-old Black man accused of associating with a white woman was forcibly taken from officers by a crowd of about 150. He was hanged and shot 17 times, then dragged behind an automobile for hours before his body was found near a Newton box factory commissary. Sheriff Hughes said he had not learned the crowd's identities and would pursue a thorough investigation.
