Next Carrier May Be Named USS Gerald Ford
In Newport News the next aircraft carrier to be built at Northrop Grumman’s yard may bear the name USS Gerald Ford after an amendment sponsored by Sen. John W. Warner. The proposal, backed by Sen. Carl Levin, seeks to honor Ford for his service and presidency as the Navy plans a CVN-21 class carrier with new propulsion and a larger flight deck. The defense bill would fund about 1 billion dollars for the ship amid a 14 billion dollar project delayed by budgeting constraints.
