Bridgewater downs Clover Hill in a top teams showdown. Lifeguards in demand this summer across Richmond and neighboring areas as pools reopen and need rises.
The Rockingham County Board of Supervisors will consider a 448 million dollar budget for the next fiscal year at a Wednesday meeting. County Administrator Stephen King says the plan aligns with the comprehensive and capital improvement plans, funding schools, pay raises, new fire and rescue staff, and a pay as you go apparatus fund. A public hearing was held April 18 with a real estate tax rate set at 68 cents per 100 of assessed value. The plan adds 2.5 million for schools, a 5 percent cost of living increase for all county employees, 15 new fire and rescue staff for the North Area Response Station, and funds to renovate Elkton Rescue Station as part of the capital plan. The sheriff’s office will add one member as well.
A wave of price increases for pipes asphalt airport terminals and other projects is inflating costs and forcing state and local officials to postpone scale back or reprioritize infrastructure work. Wyoming Wyoming Wyoming officials warn the elevated costs could push projects into future years and undermine the federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.
Hollyn Slykhuis and Andrew Wood wed at Asbury United Methodist Church in a white gown and suit. Crowds gathered as Ukrainian folk music played, bicycles filled the street, and the couple walked to a reception at Explore More Discovery Museum for a festive weekend wedding.
Hundreds gathered for a downtown Harrisonburg Juneteenth block party celebrating freedom and African American culture. Attendees described Juneteenth as liberation while enjoying a line dance to Before I Let Go. Event hosted by Mayor Deanna Reed, City Councilman Chris Jones, Magpie Diner and Sage Bird Ciderworks.
North Liberty Street block between West Gay and West Rock streets hosted the Juneteenth event from 3 to 8 p.m. with street closures. About 1,000 people attended the celebration emphasizing ending racial disparities, per Page A7 notes.
