Herbert Hoover urges all Republicans to back Harding and Coolidge as the party prepares to address foreign relations challenges. Harding expresses confidence in success and welcomes the campaign to advance the Republican program.
Washington reports Senator Harding, Republican presidential nominee, said the party would welcome a referendum on the nation's foreign relations. He expressed confidence the Republican stance on preserved nationality would be endorsed. Senator Hoover endorsed the Harding-Coolidge ticket after a breakfast conference. Harding spent the day in meetings with aides and party leaders and planned a trip home, potentially canceled, then golf with Elkins Scoby and Briger.

Winchester June 17 Representative Thomas W. Harrison denounces Col. R. F. Leedy’s criticism of his vote on extra compensation for soldier boys. He says Leedy supports the idea but would delay payment for an indefinite future and notes the earlier bill postponed payments for fifteen months then paid small amounts over two more years. He argues many soldiers left good jobs for duty and that the small extra pay, sought by Legion posts, is due. Continued on Page Eight.
Sir Hubert Johnson accompanied by Johnann arrives in Chicago from Washington en route to California. He declines to discuss politics saying he has cleared his mind and will go home to California to sit on the porch and observe the bay.

General John J. Pershing declined to stop for a reception in Harrisonburg on his return to Washington after addressing Virginia Military Institute in Lexington and speaking at Washington and Lee University. He cited lateness of hour and a long trip, sending a telegram to Harrisonburg Elks Exalted Ruler Andrew Bell to explain his unavailability.

Washington report notes William G. McAdoo withdraws to allow a Democratic national convention showing. Eleven are contesting with delegates from Pennsylvania Georgia Ohio New Jersey Nebraska Iowa Oklahoma South Dakota North Carolina Oregon and others. Uninstructed names include John W. Davis and Homer S. Cummings as convention prospects.
Montreal June 18 The American Federation of Labor re elected Samuel Gompers for the thirty ninth time at its fortieth annual convention. His victory was near unanimous with only James A Duncan opposing. Gompers thanked delegates and pledged to obey the call to duty as conservative railroad workers backed his leadership. The convention adjourned until tomorrow.
One hundred seventy four degrees were conferred at the University of Virginia commencement in Charlottesville. Among local graduates listed are Linton Baer of Harrisonburg, Glenmore Ruebush of Hinton, Charles Ishubard Muffinean, Frederick Myers of Harrisonburg, Peyton Rhodes of Crozet, and Benjamin Baker of Strasburg.
Washington reports the water power development bill, ten years in the making, has become law with President Wilson signing it before June 11. The same White House release notes he did not sign the repeal of wartime laws or the Underwood pulp embargo negotiations.
June 18 report from Des Moines quotes Mrs Edward Franklin White of Indianapolis, head of the civics committee for the Woman's Federation. She says teas do not secure votes and politics hinges on electable outcomes, preferring precinct chair roles over other party positions.

Assistant Secretary of the Treasury, once active for McAdoo, says Virginian Senator Glass is now the most formidable candidate and expected to take the lead on the first ballot at San Francisco. Glass gains support while McAdoo fades and a room grows around the Virginia senator.
In Washington on June 17 Assistant Secretary of the Treasury Shouse said McAdoo’s refusal to allow his name at the San Francisco convention will trigger a lively fight for Senator Carter Glass of Virginia. Shouse noted Glass supporters plan to surge on the first ballot, with loyal McAdoo backers pledging strong support for Glass in the South and beyond.

William G. McAdoo announced he will not allow his name to be entered at the San Francisco convention. He sent a telegram to Jouett Shouse stating the decision is final and that his duty requires him to refrain from seeking the nomination. McAdoo cited belief the party is likely to elect the next president.
Starting today and each Saturday the Southern passenger train No 21 leaves Washington for Hurricaneburg at 1 20 PM and arrives here at 6 20 PM instead of 10 20 PM on weekdays. The summer schedule applies only on Saturdays with other days following the old timetable. No changes to other trains.
