In Paris a U N conference on sanctions against South Africa opened to urge comprehensive mandatory measures. Proposals include a stronger oil embargo, ban on South African Airways landings, end arms sales, halt bank loans and foreign investment, and curb imports of South African produce. Nelson Mandela urged release. Soweto anniversary noted. Leaders Diouf and Perez de Cuellar attended. U S Britain and West Germany absent. Jesse Jackson and Harry Belafonte attended as guests. The session condemned apartheid and urged sanctions as the path to dialogue and change.
A Soviet diplomat warned Reagan's May SALT II action could derail new arms reduction talks in Geneva. Vitaly Churkin said Moscow prepared its latest proposal before talks began and that the ground is moving toward an earthquake in negotiations. White House spokesmen urged private, confidential talks and cited no summit date.
The USS Missouri, freshly recommissioned, sails into San Francisco on June 28 from Long Beach and will remain for public tours over the Fourth of July weekend. Visitors can view the 16 inch guns, cruise missiles, and a strong armor deck. The ship, scene of the 1945 surrender on its main deck, will then return to Long Beach after the holiday. The Navy also plans USS Iowa tours in New York City.
