The valley remains humid with scattered storms and highs near 85 to 90. Tonight's low 60s. Saturday looks humid with likely storms and highs in the 80s. The report includes past highs and normals, and notes First Quarter moon and evening planet positions.
The CVCC president Donald Puyear disputes a Lynchburg NAACP leader's strong claim of racial tensions at the college. The Rev. Donald W Johnson says minority staff and students face discrimination. Puyear defends progress and credits staff effort. Board candidates for state two year college system are named. chancellor choice due by end of month.
In Chesapeake Virginia a South Norfolk man, 54 year old Johnny Futrell, died in a fire possibly set by an arsonist. Police plan autopsy results to determine if death is homicide. Witness Addie Baptist reported an explosion around 8 45 p m and flames from the living area as firefighters battled the blaze. The fire was controlled in 15 to 20 minutes with the house fully engulfed upon arrival.
U S energy secretary Donald Hodel warned at the National Coal Association convention that pending acid rain legislation threatens the coal industry. He cited costs of reducing sulfur dioxide emissions and potential job losses, urged continued private funding for coal research, and advocated reliable coal supplies for foreign buyers. Senator John Warner was set to speak but was delayed.
A federal hazardous materials team from the EPA will direct the Thursday cleanup of about 1,000 rusting gas cylinders stored at Pembroke and Greenlawn avenues. Residents evacuated Wednesday were allowed to return after authorities confirmed no immediate threat. The yard owner, Gerald Moore, could be billed for removal costs while contractors prepare to remove the containers and determine their contents.
Portsmouth AP reports attorney S DeLacy Stith begins serving the remaining nine days of a 10 day jail term for contempt of court after exhausting appeals. Stith, 35, turned himself in to the City Jail as Judge Lester Schlitz had recently upheld the contempt ruling and the U.S. Supreme Court did not hear the appeal. He had been convicted of malicious wounding and use of a firearm. Stith has faced prior contempt findings and fines in Virginia courts, including delays and late hearings.
Pasco M. Bowman a New Market native and Bridgewater College graduate has been nominated for a seat on the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals. At 49 he is dean of the UMKC law school and previously led Wake Forest law school and taught at Georgia and Virginia. The Senate is expected to act before the summer recess.
Alcoholics Anonymous and Al Anon meet at Mount Vernon Mennonite Church Port Republic at 8 p.m. Al Anon gathers at Blessed Sacrament Church Johnston Hall Harrisonburg at 8 p.m. A pressure canner gauge testing clinic operates 1 to 4 p.m. at Timberville Valley Heritage. Rockingham Association of Life Underwriters holds a noon meeting at Train Station Restaurant Harrisonburg.
The Upper Valley Regional Park Authority reports attendance at Grand Caverns and Natural Chimneys Regional Parks trails well behind 1982 pace. Through May Grand Caverns is down 39 percent year to date, May down 24 percent. Natural Chimneys down 23.5 percent for the year and 3.6 percent in May, with camper numbers at Natural Chimneys down 17.9 percent for 1983.
