National Hollerin Contest Heads to Spivey’s Corner

The 10th annual event brings British BBC coverage and a visit by junior hollerers filming for The Big Blue Marble. Contests run 4 p.m. featuring junior hollering, whistling, conch horn, frog croaking, and the women’s national final at 5:15 p.m. Iris Turner of Fayetteville competes. Buck Swamp Kickin’ Cloggers perform. 6 p.m. marks the main event.

One-Third Fail In Richmond Eighth Grade

In Richmond city schools more than one-third of eighth graders were not promoted this year. 34 percent of 2,400 pupils will repeat the grade, far above the historic 7 to 10 percent. Those not promoted trail three years or more in reading and math and will get remedial courses in 1978-79 with smaller classes and longer instruction.
