Rockingham County withdraws financial support prompting CART to suspend OCTI bus service to Elkton this Friday and subsidized taxi service for elderly, low income, and disabled residents by Sunday. Other services end by month’s end as CART reassesses options.
Incumbent Dee Floyd, 77, defeated D Kenneth Patterson 809 to 611 in Rockingham County District 3 Republican primary. With no announced challengers from other parties, Floyd appears headed for a likely November win as Patterson’s ads failed to gain traction. Floyd noted voter resistance to development. Patterson, owner of D K Patterson Construction, has previously challenged Floyd in past elections.
Voters in Harrisonburg totaled 583 of eligible residents, 3.62 percent, with Charles Geil and Glenn Green among the supporters. In the Republican race Jerry Kilgore led for governor with 326 votes to George Fitch’s 42. William Bolling topped lieutenant governor with 258 to Sean Connaughton’s 92. Robert McDonnell led attorney general with 266 to Stephen Baril’s 83. Democratic voters backed J C Chap Peterson for lieutenant governor.

A Virginia jury deadlocked on two MS-13 defendants Oscar Antonio Grande and Ismael Juarez Cisneros on life or death for the July 2008 murder of Brenda Paz four months pregnant. Both will receive life in prison after formal sentencing in Alexandria. Paz, lured to Shenandoah County, was stabbed 13 times and killed for snitching to police while in witness protection. The two-month trial exposed MS-13’s inner workings as the gang has pursued crimes across Northern Virginia.
