Union backed Democrats pressed a last minute bid to derail President Obama’s trade agenda by sacrificing their retraining program for workers displaced by international trade. Virginia Democrats filed a federal lawsuit against the State Board of Elections to overturn the photo ID requirement for voters and ease access for groups cited as disproportionately affected. Gavin Grimm, a 16 year old transgender student, sues Gloucester County School Board with the ACLU alleging stigma from a December rule forcing transgender students to use private facilities. The suit claims he avoided restrooms to escape stigma.
Virginia DEQ workers from Harrisonburg led the North River Cleanup along seven miles from Bridgewater Wildwood Park to southeast of Mount Crawford. Coordinated with the Adopt A Stream program, they gathered a kitchen sink, an ice cream trolley, and a 45-pound bronze dorm plaque from the 1949 flood, noting a shift to fewer household items and more tires. The Thursday cleanup was described as a bit tricky by DEQ official Don Kain.
