The convention adjourned to 10 A. M. after four ballots produced no majority. Wood led with 31414 votes, Lowden 289, Johnson 1401, among 984 total votes. Twelve other candidates totaled 240, leaving no nominee and a 493 needed for nomination. Chicago time indicates noon expectations.
In Chicago on June 11 the Republican national convention held ten hours of continuous session and cast four ballots in a failed attempt to nominate a presidential candidate. Wood, Lowden, and Johnson led in that order but failed to reach the required votes. Johnson’s strength stood at about 140. Hoover’s maximum vote is noted. Continued on page three.
At a large June meeting in Friendship Hall Winchester Virginia the Jefferson Club endorsed Colonel Robert F. Leedy for Congress. The group noted his Virginia Senate work and Democratic platform. Club members expect Leedy to carry Ro chester and Frederick counties in the district.

At the State Sunday School convention final session at the State Normal School a committee report on resolutions was unanimously adopted. A resolution calls for weekly one hour religious instruction in public schools led by local Protestant pastors rabbis and priests. Another resolution backs 18th Amendment and Volstead enforcement in political conventions. The body also lent thanks to Prof. S. P. Ottobine Sunday School hosts an ice cream festival on Saturday evening June 12. Community members are invited to attend.

Washington June 11 four persons on board the army transport Mount Vernon committed death by own action after one of the ship’s propellers broke off Virginia Coast. The vessel carried 4000 Czecho Slovak troops, 900 German war prisoners, and 250 women and children. It is bound for Norfolk with mobilization of nurses and readiness in place.
The Baltimore News reports the marriage of Walter O. Rutherford son of M. L. Rutherford formerly of near Harrisonburg and Miss Mary G. Street of 342 East Twentieth Street. The romance began at the deathbed of the bridegroom’s mother and was revealed with the wedding announcement last Wednesday.
