The cost to the U S Roman Catholic Church from sexual abuse by priests has surpassed 1 billion dollars with projections to rise as hundreds more claims remain. Dioceses report at least 1.06 billion in settlements verdicts legal fees and related expenses since 1950.
Abusive priest cases have cost the church over 1 billion dollars with major settlements from Tucson Providence Boston Louisville Orange and Covington. Notable payouts include 15 million in Tucson 13.5 million in Providence 85 million in Boston 25.7 million in Louisville 100 million in Orange and a 120 million fund in Covington.
The 26th District covering Harrisonburg and parts of Rockingham County awaits a high-stakes contest between Democrat Lowell Fulk and Republican Matt Lohr to succeed retiring Del. Glenn Weatherholtz. GOP backers tout Lohr's strong record on the county school board while Democrats note Fulk narrowed Weatherholtz's margin in 2003.
