Monica Lewinsky’s new lawyers Jacob Stein and Plato Cacheris met Whitewater prosecutor Kenneth Starr for over an hour in Washington. The discussion aimed to forge a framework for Lewinsky’s cooperation and immunity, not to exchange evidence. A prior immunity dispute with first lawyer William Ginsburg had soured. Vernon Jordan testified later, confirming his help in obtaining Lewinsky’s lawyer and job while denying any sexual relationship with Clinton.
Washington AP reports the Army plans to slim heavy combat divisions and digitize operations by 2000 led by Gen. Hartzog. The 4th Infantry Division at Fort Hood will pilot a flexible force using embedded computer systems to answer basic battlefield questions. The plan aims to field 3,000 to 5,000 strong strike units and adjust light divisions for multiprong threats including Bosnia and Haiti.
Harrisonburg city officials listened but did not vote on Virginia anti handgun violence proposals from Shenandoah Valley VAHV. Mayor Eagle and several council members said they did not plan to bring the measures to a vote. Proposals seek to ban loaded firearms on public property and near schools, require background checks, and restrict sales near schools. the group pledged to press forward despite the council’s stance.
A five year international study led by the University of Michigan found hypertensive patients can lower heart attack risk by driving diastolic pressure below traditional goals, potentially to 80. Diabetics showed even greater reductions, with researchers noting major cardiovascular events could be halved. The trial involved 18790 patients aged 50 to 80 across 26 countries and was presented at the Amsterdam meeting of the International Society of Hypertension.
