United Nations backs U S plan for Iraq sovereignty transfer

The U N Security Council approved 15 to 0 a U S resolution backing the transfer of sovereignty to Iraq’s new government 14 months after Saddam’s fall. France and Germany dropped objections after a compromise giving Iraqi leaders control over some troop activities and sensitive operations while stopping short of veto power over major U S led missions. The interim government will assume power June 30 and may request the multinational force depart at any time. Bush hailed the vote at the Group of Eight summit saying it shows unity toward a free peaceful democratic Iraq.

Two Car Bombs Add To Iraq Death Toll

Bombers hit targets in two Iraqi cities killing 15 people including a U S soldier and wounding 50. Six European soldiers died south of Baghdad when munitions exploded, the first Slovak and Latvian fatalities in Iraq, with Poland reporting six total losses.

Two car bombs exploded in northern Iraqi cities on Tuesday killing at least 14 Iraqis and one U.S. soldier. More than 120 people were wounded amid chaos and fear across the region.

County Keeps Out Non-Resident Students

Rockingham County School Board extended the moratorium on non resident students with an unanimous vote as the limit was set to expire, allowing only children of full time county employees to attend with annual permission. Non resident students must have transportation arranged by guardians and buses will not serve outside the county without approval.

The rules bar non-resident students from county schools with one exception for children of county employees who live outside the division. Non-resident employees must seek annual permission for their children to attend. Students moving away during the year must finish the current semester before leaving. Spotswood teen apologizes in court for online threats

Adam Spencer, a Spotswood High School student removed in May for threats in an online journal, apologized in Rockingham Juvenile Court during a sentencing hearing. He pleaded guilty to a Class 6 felony for threats of bodily harm, with a plea agreement guiding therapy, firearm restrictions, school access limits, and possible felony-to-misdemeanor reduction in a year.
