Judge Drops Charges in Virginia Utility Survey Row
Three surveyors from Stone & Webster Engineering for Virginia Electric & Power Co. had trespassing charges dropped in Augusta County General District Court. Judge B C Goodloe ruled the survey team had a legal right to access private property after notice, though prosecutors argued the party acted beyond authority by cutting a long path through woods and destroying trees. The men Ronald Thompson Curtis Leggett and Walter Manning, all Tarboro North Carolina residents, were arrested May 24 at the B C Clemmer farm while surveying a 500000 volt line right of way under construction in Bath County. The utility says routes were offered but rejected. Clemmer vows further action to move the line away from his home.
