Swiss road deaths fell 17.5 percent to 908 and injuries by 2.9 percent to 29,827, the lowest toll since 1954 after intercity and highway speed limits were reduced starting January 1, 1985. Deaths on four-lane superhighways declined 21.7 percent as the lower limits, from 100 kph to 80 kph outside cities and from 130 kph to 120 kph on highways, took effect.
