A weather forecast predicts showers today along a band stretching from parts of Illinois, Missouri, Arkansas and Louisiana northeastward, bringing wet conditions to the region.

U S officials confirm more than 30 Cuban political prisoners released in recent weeks, many after an appeal by Jacques Cousteau. Two released May 10 spoke with U S officials in Havana, part of a group of 27 aided by Cousteau and the Cuban-American Foundation. Reports say up to 1 000 may have been freed this spring, though not all were political cases.
New Hampshire Supreme Court unanimously ruled the state Liquor Commission overstepped its authority by banning Stolichnaya vodka. The commission had pulled the Soviet product from shelves but allowed case sales via special order after the 1983 Korean Air Lines disaster. Importer Monsieur Henri Wines argued the ban ignored profitability and state law.
CHICAGO AP Longtime Chicago Sun Times columnist Irv Kupcinet will be honored with renaming a Chicago River bridge. Mayor Harold Washington praised his 50 years of service to the city and the Sun Times. Kupcinet, 73, began his column in 1943.
