Adlai Stevenson held a strong lead over Estes Kefauver in California's Democratic presidential preference primary with 6,385 of 24,160 precincts reporting. Stevenson 227,192 Kefauver 125,582, led in Los Angeles County, and 68 delegates were at stake. Nationally, the California result weighed heavily in the nomination race against Eisenhower. Other states also chose delegates as Republicans backed Eisenhower for renomination.
