Bush Taps Leroy For Nuclear Post

President Bush will nominate David H. Leroy former Idaho lieutenant governor as the negotiator to search nationwide for a site to store highly radioactive nuclear waste. Leroy will canvass governors tribal leaders and others seeking a location to host a temporary or permanent high level waste repository. He expects the role to be controversial but will push an aggressive nationwide search. Congress ordered the appointment in 1987 alongside Yucca Mountain designation as the likely repository site.

Crime clearance rates vary. Harrisonburg leads local effort

Presgrave notes Harrisonburg’s 27.43 percent clearance rate amid 1,518 serious 1989 crimes, most of which were petty larcenies. Statewide, crimes against people cleared over 75 percent, while property crimes lagged. County results ranged from Richmond County’s 120.59 percent to Nelson and Surry counties at 20 percent.
