Showers are predicted today for bands extending from parts of Missouri and Iowa northeast through much of New England. Additional showers are expected in parts of Washington Idaho Wyoming Montana and North Dakota.
Partly cloudy skies with a chance of showers Friday through Sunday in Virginia. Highs in the low to mid 80s, lows in the 60s. Temperature figures show Wednesday 84, 51, 78 with rain 0.00 inches. Historical normals: 80, 52. Record highs and lows listed as 97 in 1925 and 36 in 1956.
Secretary of State George P. Shultz praised the 100 day Aquino government in New York urging American business to invest in the Philippines and noting stability and growth potential. He warned investors to move off the fence as U.S. aid and private capital aim to restart flow after Marcos era debt and turmoil.
President Corazon Aquino says 100 days since Marcos was deposed brought freedom but keeping it depends on Filipinos. She vows a corruption free, equal society, urges self-reliance to solve economic distress, and cites a cease-fire push with insurgents. Gen Ramos notes Marcos loyalists remain a force as security holds but could worsen.
Multimillionaire Eugene Lang, Swarthmore College alumnus and board chair, announces a $10 million gift earmarked for a new performing arts center and English department offices. The donation, the largest in the college’s 122 year history, follows $6 million given in 1981 and prior gifts totaling about $2 million. Lang, 67, also plans to adopt six more sixth grade classes this spring, continuing a program that has inspired fifty students to pursue college plans. commencements will reveal the selections this month.
One of two assault and battery charges against Meredith Conley of Rt. 2 Elkton was dismissed in Rockingham General District Court this week. Conley received a 60 day suspended jail sentence for another assault charge.
