A band of showers is predicted today extending from Kentucky and the Virginias northeast to southern New England. Showers are also likely in southeast Florida.
A weather update shows a mostly cloudy day with occasional showers and thunderstorms, highs in the upper 60s to low 70s. Cloudy tonight with lingering showers and storms, lows around the low to mid 60s, then partly cloudy Saturday with a morning shower possible and highs in the 70s.
Daniel D. Chafin 22 of Peterstown West Virginia faces six counts of involuntary manslaughter in a fatal head on crash near Gore Virginia. He testified he was drinking all day and chased by a Wardensville police car at speeds 55 to 60 mph before the vehicle he followed struck another car killing six people in Herndon and nearby towns. Blood alcohol content was .24 and a prior drunk driving conviction carries six months jail and license loss. The jury prepares to hear closing arguments as photographs of the victims are admitted.
The Byrd independent petition drive faces delays in the Roanoke Valley due to a family death and illness, but progress continues elsewhere in Virginia. A June 8 filing deadline looms as organizers aim for 10,756 signatures to qualify Byrd, with a target well above that seen by supporters.
