A committee urges action to Mexico if the new regime protects American interests. If not friendly, supporters propose sending an expedition to take charge and ensure full recognition and aid for the United States.
Washington May 31 the foreign relations sub committee urged possible U S armed intervention in Mexico if a stable government friendly to Americans cannot be set up. It endorsed full recognition only after a treaty guaranteeing life and property of foreigners and payment of claims. If Mexican leaders refuse, a police force could be sent to open all lines of communication between Mexico City and seaports and border ports. Mexico City May 31 Adolfo de la Huerta pledged guarantees to political candidates workers and capitalists and said a commission would probe Carranza’s death while he promised future cabinet members and a possible expulsion of Ignacio Bonillas if investigations show him involved in politics.
Memorial exercises on Court Square honored thirty eight men from Rothing ham County and Harrisonburg who died in World War I. Rockingham Post No 27 American Legion organized the event with Scouts guards, flags, a band, and choirs. Rev H M Canter opened and Rev B F Wilton closed. Malcolm S Taylor spoke, recalling service in France and urging how Americans may honor the dead.
Woodstock May 31 Loss of property valued between 15000 and 20000 occurred at the Standard Stone and Line Company lime plant at Strasburg about 2 o'clock this morning. Six sheds surrounding the kilns were destroyed by fire but rapid fire-fighting saved machinery and nearby buildings filled with barrel staves. The loss is believed insured.
Gaston Chevrolet, driving an American design car, clinched the eighth running of the Indianapolis 500 before a record 125,000 crowd. His 50:40:16 time averaged 88.6 mph, the second fastest in the event’s history.
Three erect FYMATS iy of the State Normal School will deliver commencement addresses tonight in distinct sections of the state. Dr. W. J. Gifford speaks at Jarrat near Norfolk, Raymond C. Dingledine at EKagle Rock Botetourt County, and Conrad T. Logan at Boyce Clark County. Mint Lyda M. Hopwood of Cumberland visits her sister in Dayton and attends Shenandoah Collegiate Institute ceremonies.
The House passes measures restricting corporate gains to eight percent on capital and mandating one vote per member. The vote was 233 to 58 in favor.
Washington May 31 The House passed a bill by 238 to 58 to let farmers planters ranchers dairymen and fruit growers unite for collective marketing of their products despite anti trust laws. It sets eight percent cap on annual returns and one vote per member with the secretary of agriculture controlling enforcement after hearings and power to sue in federal court for noncompliance.
The Shenandoah Collegiate Institute and School of Music hosted a Friday night contest between the Platonian and Ciceronian men and Zenobian and Austin women societies. Roscoe Miller won the men’s gold and Margaret Poland won the women’s gold. judges praised the delivery and arrangement.

Linville Edom High School pupils present the comedy Miss Topsy Turvy in three acts at Timberville Thursday night June 4. The ensemble performs for local audiences in the school gym and aims to entertain with student actors and lighthearted scenes.

J Buck Burner a farmer near Woodstock died after his car rolled three times off a steep embankment while traveling to the mountain to cut a bee tree. Passenger Hugh Sweeney escaped unharmed. Dr Id of Woodstock attended Burner who died shortly after. He is survived by his wife. Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon.
The House passed a soldier bonus bill with benefits totaling over 1.4 million for about 4.5 million former service members. The final vote was 289 to 92 after limiting debate and blocking amendments. The measure taxes stock and grain exchanges, incomes above 5,000, tobacco and real estate transfers to fund the bonus, with benefits starting June 1, 1921 and optional cash or training options for servicemen.
Memorial day observances took place in Hollywood cemetery with a parade and exercises. The Hollywood Memorial Association led the tribute to Confederate soldiers and Spanish War relatives, while the American Legion post conducted the World War victims ceremony.

President Wilson summoned Democratic National Committee Chairman Cummings to discuss the San Francisco convention on June 28. They reviewed the platform, league of nations issues, peace treaty prospects, and campaign finance investigations as Cummings prepared the keynote speech. Wilson plans further talks with party leaders during the event.
The music department at State Normal School announces daily recitals this week in Harrison Hall auditorium except Wednesday and Friday nights. A large turnout from city and Normal School students is expected with programs featuring Camp of Glory March, In Dreamland, Butterfly Wing, Just We Two, Auf den Bergen, The Magic Melody, Le Secret, Farandola, Joyous Round, Mazurka, The Flatterer, Pas des Amphores, Valse Caprice and more performed by named students.

W W Pence, a travelling salesman, was seriously injured when his auto was struck by a Pullman car at the Haldeman railway crossing. The car was shoved 35 feet, Pence trapped in wreckage, later revived en route to Rockingham Memorial Hospital. Fractured ribs, gashes and head wounds reported. condition later listed as satisfactory.
The Virginia State Tax Board filed a mandamus petition with Judge T N Haas to force Page County’s local tax review and commissioner to assess capital stock at Wyant posted figures. The action targets taxes totaling about 150000 for 1905 through 1915 and 960000 yearly 1905 1914 plus 920000 for 1915. Judge Cameron of the circuit court calls a grand jury for June 21 in Matewan West Virginia to investigate the Matewan pistol battle in which ten men died, during clashes between miners and Baldwin-Felts detectives on May 19.
