On American Airlines Flight 63 from Paris to Miami a tall bearded man with a ponytail, Tariq Raja of Sri Lanka, tried to light explosives in his shoe. Subdued by a flight attendant and four passengers, the plane diverted to Boston. It was escorted by F 15s and returned to Miami after about 24 hours. Passengers underwent extensive questioning and most continued to Miami.
The Associated Press reports preliminary FBI tests detected explosives in sneakers carried by a passenger who attempted to ignite them on a Boeing 767. The man, identified as Richard C. Reid and Tariq Raja by authorities, faces a federal assault on a flight crew charge with up to 20 years possible. He had an initial court appearance and was held under guard in Plymouth, while French police probe how security was bypassed at Charles de Gaulle.
Yasser Arafat defied an Israeli ban on attending the Christmas Eve service in Bethlehem vowing to go even if he must walk to Manger Square. Israel and Arafat faced a tense showdown as Security Cabinet debates lifting restrictions while Palestinians rally outside the Church of the Nativity protesting the ban.
