The Ursid meteor shower reaches maximum activity now and will be most noticeable from midnight until moonrise. Meteors travel at moderate speeds as observers note the celestial display around late December.
Suffolk police charged Petty Officer Mark S. Michael with involuntary manslaughter in the Oct. 24 shooting death of hunter Elbert J. Kidd in the Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge. Kidd, 36, was found shot in the head near the swamp entry after a deer hunt with Michael and Charles King. Michael, 27, was arrested in Portsmouth and released on 2500 dollars bond with arraignment set for Dec. 29. The case followed a week of extensive interviews with 167 hunters and FBI ballistic tests identifying the shot source. Kidd left a wife and four sons. investigators noted multiple opportunities for Michael to come forward.
Hampton police conclude a husband shot his wife and two children then killed himself in a domestic tragedy. Don Deel, 32, his wife Jeanette, 28, son Sam, 10, and daughter Amanda, 7, were found dead in their home. The elder Deel recalled a distressing telephone call. authorities noted depression and unemployment as factors.
John Arnold Beard Jr., 21, a Duke University student from Richmond, is among 32 U S Rhodes Scholars for 1981. He plans to study theoretical physics at Oxford and pursue research in electrical engineering, after leading St Christopher's School to a 1978 valedictory.
Jon B. Simonis pleaded guilty to seven attacks since 1979 and received 15 life terms plus 1,389 years in prison from two state judges. He had already faced three life terms and 657 years for sex assaults in Jena and Gonzales. Judge Higginbotham gave 10 life terms and 858 years for 24 counts of armed robbery and related charges. Judge Moreau issued five life terms and 531 years for 16 counts. Both sentences require hard labor with no probation, parole, or pardon. An alleged accomplice, John Glass Dickinson III, pleaded innocent to related charges.
Covington National Bank shareholders ratified a merger with First Virginia Banks Inc by 91.9 percent of 157,500 shares. Each Covington share will exchange for five First Virginia common shares. Covington National, with about $53 million in resources, serves Alleghany County and Covington city. First Virginia holds about $1.6 billion.
Tallent Ted C. of Weisel Seed Co in Harrisonburg is named to the Citizens National Bank board in New Market. A 1967 Harrisonburg High School graduate, he earned a bachelor’s degree from East Tennessee State University in 1971.
