Virginia's coal mining deaths rose to 15 this year, three more than all of 1980, with two recent fatalities near Oakwood in Buchanan County and Island Creek Coal Co.'s No. 6 mine. The drops include a surface mine incident involving William Fields and a belt-related death of Ralph Stowers, while national tolls rose to 144 with 27 deaths over five days. United Mine Workers President Sam Church Jr. blamed MSHA staffing cuts and morale.
West Virginia congressman Cleve Benedict questions a clear link between federal mine safety spending and actual mine safety after three fatal disasters. He criticizes deep cuts to MSHA inspectors but notes state, company, and union measures also affect safety. Byrd advocates halting cuts. MSHA inspectors drop from 828 to 758.
Alta Ohio Valley Coal Co spokesman Grant Godwin said shipments of 100000 tons monthly are suspended due to a contract dispute over payment with an overseas partner. Alla Ohio filed for federal reorganization last month. shipments through Morehead City are down from April to November total 871000 tons, with over $2 million owed to Southern Railway.
In Portsmouth the Virginia NAACP executive director Jack Gravely challenged Gov elect Charles Robb. He said blacks reject token posts such as department of corrections and demand policy making roles. The rally aimed to mobilize 5,000 more Portsmouth citizens to register for the May councilman election.
In San Francisco Opera artistic circles a emotional farewell welcomed Kurt Adler as he conducted Carmen for the final time. Adler, 76, Austrian-born, led the company since 1953, guiding it to world prominence before ending his tenure with a season finale.
The AP corrected a Dec 8 story to name the Edison Toys USA models criticized by Americans for Democratic Action. The consumer group singled out two cap guns the Falconmatic and Ghost. Edison officials say other toy guns exist not cited by the ADA panel.
Donnelley and Sons Co and Bethlehem Steel Corp announce a safe labor lease under the Economic Recovery Tax Act of 1981. Donnelley has paid about 35 million to Bethlehem with 10 million more expected this year. Bethlehem will use the funds for modernization capital expenditures at its steel facilities.
