Del. Chris Saxman R Staunton used a Tuesday legislative breakfast to stake out a firm stance against raising Virginia cigarette taxes. He urged reducing or ending exemptions for non profit groups to boost revenue without increasing rates. The debate centered on Virginia’s 2 percent per pack tax, the nation’s lowest.
U S companies boosted productivity in the third quarter to a 5.1 percent annual rate, better than earlier estimates, signaling strength in output per hour. October factory orders rose 1.5 percent after declines in August and September, offering hopeful data for manufacturers amid a late summer downturn.

A vast storm blanketed from Texas Panhandle to Virginia with sleet snow and freezing rain. It forced closures of hundreds of schools and the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina while Fort Campbell closed. Kevin Miller all opposed raising taxes to close the state budget gap, urging instead tax exemptions review for nonprofits and campaigns against tax increases.
Fred Shifflett, 60, was ordered to stay away from his wife Laurie a week before her death from a torso shotgun wound at their Spotswood Trail home near Elkton. He survived a later self inflicted gunshot and remained hospitalized as investigators probe a double sided attack and possible murder suicide.
Justices consider extending federal racketeering and extortion statutes to punish anti abortion demonstrators. Clinics and a rights group urge penalties to curb violence while asserting First Amendment concerns loom for all protesters. About 30 abortion rights supporters protested outside the court as arguments began.
United Airlines failed to win a 1.8 billion federal loan guarantee as the Air Transportation Stabilization Board rejected the plan as not financially sound. Two of three members opposed the request, with one deferring to December 9 for more data. The decision leaves United facing potential Chapter 11 unless costs and plan improve.
