Drivers report heavy congestion on I-81 during Thanksgiving weekend as multiple wrecks and high holiday volumes slow travel. NATO to assume Afghan mission eventually says Rumsfeld

Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld signaled at a NATO meeting that Washington would like NATO to eventually take over the Afghan military mission. Deadliest Samarra battle as U S fires back at militants

In Samarra, U S troops battled coordinated attacks using tanks and rockets. Forty six Iraqi fighters were killed as five Americans were wounded. Minutes later two South Korean contractors were killed in a roadside ambush. Attacks also killed seven Spaniards, two Japanese diplomats, and a Colombian oil worker. Illinois Historians Publicize False Lincoln Quotes Online

Illinois historians warn that many Lincoln quotes are misattributed to the 16th president. The Illinois Historic Preservation Agency has added a web page debunking sayings such as to sin by silence and you can fool all the people some of the time. The effort cites Knox College’s Rodney Davis and state historian Thomas Schwartz, noting evidence for several quotes is uncertain and often based on later recollections rather than verified speeches.

D-Day Memorial Alters Admission and Parking Fees

The National D-Day Memorial Foundation in Bedford will switch to 5 adults 3 for ages 6 to 16 and free for under 6 starting Jan 9. Until then a 10 vehicle parking fee remains. April Cheek, education director, says changes simplify pricing and aid large vans and buses. Previously vans and buses paid 45 75 and 150 per vehicle, regardless of passengers.
