Matthew J. Barber Jr., 49, a fugitive from a work-release program, is identified in court records as a convicted murderer. Barber was convicted of second degree murder in 1974 for fatally shooting a man and has accumulated numerous violent charges over the years, none of which led to convictions.
The fugitive’s violent history contradicts earlier Rockingham County Sheriff’s Department claims that no violent offenders are admitted to work release. Barber, serving three years of a reinstated sentence, appears in an escapee context as reported on Page 2.

Authorities believe 49 year old Matthew J. Barber Jr. fled the Har risonburg work-release crew with outside help after leaving the police building around 11 p.m. Tuesday. Bloodhound search failed to track scent beyond a nearby parking lot, suggesting an outside pickup.
Linville United Church of Christ suffered a devastating fire causing about 250000 dollars in damage to a two story wood building. Roy Smith, a 74 year old lifelong congregant, recalls his ties to the church as fire crews battled the blaze and members mourn a building seen as a family member. Fire officials have not yet determined a cause but church members suspect an electrical glitch. The steeple remains and the entryway survived, while stained glass windows were mostly ruined. The fire took hold early Thursday, with arrival around 445 a.m. and control reached within an hour.
