Spring Creek faces Bridgewater in a decisive league tilt that could split the standings with Broadway. Meantime Keesletown hosts Reville in a neighborhood showdown as two clubs reach far apart home grounds. A family obituary notes a heart attack death near Lone, with services planned Sunday.
In the American League Detroit defeated Washington 1 to 0 with 12 innings. Cleveland beat New York 2 to 1, Chicago triumphed 8 to 2 over Philadelphia, St. Louis won 9 to 7 against Boston. All National League games were rained out. In the International League Jersey City 6 Rochester 5, Providence 9 Baltimore 5, Syracuse 6 Buffalo 5.
Wingo lined a game deciding triple off Coveleskie in the eleventh, followed by Marberry’s three straight bases on balls to clinch a 1 to 0 win for Detroit. Bassler contributed a rare double. Judge remained hospitalized with a brain concussion and possible skull fracture after a second inning pitch impact.
In August 1941 Chicago White Sox beat the Philadelphia Athletics 8 to 1, extending Connie Mack’s club skid to five. Ed Rommell was wild on the mound before giving way to a pinch hitter, and Lefty Baumgartner could not stem the Sox onslaught. Athletic defense also misplayed three errors in the eighth.
In Chicago, August 21, major league pennant races show Washington with a one game edge after Detroit edges the Senators 1 to 0 in extra innings and Chicago defeats Philadelphia 8 to 2. standings list Washington 74 41 644, Pittsburgh 60 57 573, New York 60 53 532 with Philadelphia and others hampered by rain.
In Woodstock on August 21 the Massanutten Post No 122 American Legion met at the County Court House and elected officers for the coming year including F S Tavenner Jr as Commander and Jas D Peer as Vice Commander. The National Bank of Woodstock offered its large office for post quarters and the offer was accepted. The post is the youngest in Virginia and recently won a silver loving cup for highest parade enrollment at Staunton statewide convention.
Wilson beats Norfolk 2 0 while Richmond advances with a 6 0 win over Portsmouth and Kinston defeats Rocky Mount 5 3 in a sequence of league results.
LURAY Aug 21. Dr J Vincent Spitler dentist of Luray and Miss Katherine Menefee were married at the bride’s parents home. Rev J W Leggett officiated. Spitler, son of Jos N Spitler, graduated from the Medical College of Virginia in 1924. Menefee, daughter of Mr and Mrs J Y Menefee, has taught at Luray High School. A sister of the groom was married in Luray Tuesday.
