Navy and Newport News reach submarine contract agreement
Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co and the Navy reportedly agreed on contract language for three Los Angeles class submarines worth over 1.2 billion dollars, with a fourth pending. A spokesman said no contract is signed yet, while the shipyard refuses to comment. The yard had protested new Navy cost provisions intended to curb overruns and requires nine month cost overrun reporting. The agreement allegedly includes a more liberal cost review, with both sides expected to give ground. The yard is currently constructing eight Los Angeles class submarines at Newport News.

A steam tunnel blast at Virginia Tech killed two workers, Warren Broce and Ronald Lucas, and injured a third, Robert Dellinger. Broce had 46 years with Tech, Lucas 14.
