Britain reports progress along a front from the Somme to Morlancourt with lines improved near Lecon and the Lawe river. Berlin claims French prisoners and asserts larger attacks were repulsed as German forces press in the Lys salient area. News notes Austro-Hungarian plans against Italy and possible coordinated German offensives.
President Wilson ordered a Department of Justice inquiry into graft allegations in aircraft production raised by sculptor Gutzon Borglum. The probe will also cover Borglum’s charges of pro German influence and follows Senate calls for a criminal investigation. Snowden Marshall will head the investigating commission.
In France on May 6 the Australians and British Army seized 500 yards of ground along a 2000 yard front west and southwest of Morlancourt between the Ancre and Somme rivers. The Germans offered strong resistance but Australian troops suffered light losses.
The War Office reports serial air raids drop nine tons of bombs on Chaulnes and Chemines railway junctions, with one enemy aircraft shot down and four damaged. Two British planes are missing, four recovered. later activity totals over three tons on Bapaume junction. All our planes return safely.
The war office announces British forces pulled back from Es Salt east of the Jordan in Palestine. In recent days about 1,000 German and Turkish soldiers were captured along with 29 machine guns.
Washington May 6 An analysis of Liberty Loan reports shows about 17,000,000 persons bought bonds in the campaign that closed last midnight, 7,600 more than in the second tour.
Adjutant General D. Beary told Harrisburg Rotary Club that every American should act as an agent against German propaganda. He forecast 3,000,000 more draftees by year end and noted Pennsylvania contributions of 125,000 soldiers, 16,000 National Guard, plus 70 percent of Army clothing and munitions. He praised Colonel King and Keystone division strength.
Mrs. Kate Brew Vaughn a Pennsylvania household economic expert opened a six day series at Panestock Hall with demonstrations on food conservation. She teaches proper use of bran cornmeal oatmeal and other staples to replace wheat and promises samples for attendees while explaining balanced rations to conserve the nation’s food and keep families healthy.
In Bellaghadereen East Mayo a large anti conscription rally drew about 15 000 attendees. John Dillon and Edward De Valera spoke from the same platform urging unity and a two week push to defeat conscription as an oppression forcing Irish to fight for a country not theirs.
Paris reports Germans are injecting asphyxiating gas into letters sent home by prisoners. A French prisoner’s letter poisoned a woman in La Licotierie village after she opened it. Another wife in Bavaria received a similar letter from her captive husband. Additional cases are cited.
A Tuesday afternoon lecture at Fahnestock Hall Y M C A builds a wartime kitchen program by Mrs Vaughn. She outlines practical war foods receipts and cost, time, and value, stressing wheat substitutes and home economy for housewives. Receipts are plain and usable daily.
Wounded British airmen report a squadron on the Amiens front has downed 106 enemy machines in six weeks, including 21 in one day. They describe German pilots as unwilling to engage, preferring sun glare and retreat, while two seater German craft dominated by ground fire.

Washington May 6. The Supreme Court ruled the 1906 merger of Cumberland Presbyterian and Presbyterian churches and the consolidation of their property valid. The decision affirms the transfer of church assets and the unification of the two denominations in a single body.
A Central News report from the Hague says Jonkheer Colyn, a former German war minister, offered eight points for peace. Proposals include renunciation of western claims, Belgian restoration, Alsace Lorraine autonomy, and an international conference on Balkan and colonial issues.
Amsterdam May 6. Emperor William telegrams to German Chamber of Commerce speak of successes shaping world development. He says the peace will open new routes for German commerce and allow free development of industry. Field Marshal Von Hindenburg also urges unity for a peaceful era of prosperity for commerce and industry.
The Supreme Court sustained federal court rulings denying habeas corpus actions by Robert Cox of Missouri a National Army member to block his dispatch to France. The court refused to rule on contempt motions against Major General Ward Wood commander of Camp Funston for permitting Cox to be sent to France during his appeal.
In Washington on May 6 the Senate rejected by one vote a motion to proceed next Friday to consider the House woman suffrage resolution. The tally was 40 to 21, just short of the two thirds required.
