Washington reports thousands of American regulars and Marines landed in France after a record voyage, fresh from the Mexican border Haiti and Santo Domingo. They join Allied forces, bringing ample supplies and equipment, with the unit expected to operate as an independent link or connector between French and British armies.
An Atlantic Port report from June 28 recalls transports ferrying soldiers to France two weeks earlier. The departure lacks crowds and bands, only scattered cheers from a few comrades left behind to run the concentration camp. Doughboy slogan echoes as veterans appear bronzed and ready for action.

Paris reports that the German assault on the Wattweiler salient northeast of Thann in Alsace was repulsed with several dead and a wounded officer found. French artillery fought near Hurtebise monument and Mount Camillet. patrols near Flirey and Bezonvaux captured prisoners. An Albatross aircraft reportedly crashed east of Gratreuil after a prior engagement.
The omnibus road bill Shortens the William Penn Highway between Clarks Ferry and Newport by fifteen miles. The New Bloomfield Middleburg Sproul route will route via Amity Hall along the Juniata River to Newport. A permanent road from the Ferry to Newport will be built to connect to the westward route to Millers town.
Postmaster Frank Sites relays new rules for mail to American expeditionary forces in Europe. Letters must include full unit designation plus sender name and prepaid postage. Only U S stamps accepted. A mail agency at a French port will route outgoing letters to the troops.
Yonner Kottcamp, arrested for drunkenness and disorderly conduct, is sentenced by Mayor Hugentugler to attend church four Sundays and report to the mayor. It is his twenty fifth appearance. if he fails, a 25 dollar fine or 30 days in jail awaits.
Senator Clarence J. Buckman of Bucks was elected president pro tem succeeding Edward E. Beidleman. He was the unanimous Republican choice named by Senator Crow. Democrats named Asa K. DeWitt of Luzerne. Senator R. E. Smith of Crawford said his party caucus had not met.
The Senate approved a broad slate of minor nominations from Governor Brumbaugh, confirming several officials including George A. Shreiner as Superintendent of Public Grounds and Buildings and John Price Jackson as Commissioner of Labor and Industry. The body rejected Patton for Secretary of Agriculture, Lafean for Banking Commissioner, Long for Superintendent of Printing, Buller for Fish Commissioner, and Nead for Examiners of Public Accountants. Additional appointments and reappointments were noted for various state boards and officials.

According to Telegraaf several priests associated with Cardinal Mercier were recently arrested and imprisoned in Germany. Bishop Legraive of Malines is named among them and twenty others are reported imprisoned in Belgium, including Cardinal Mercier’s private secretary who received a year sentence for a Whitsun sermon on Christian Charity.
In Wheeling West Virginia a cave at Tepman's Hill yielded a skeleton resembling a devil image with two horns above the temples. The four foot creature had a long tail, four limbs with four fingers, a broad powerful chest, and was discovered by boys who fled shouting their grisly find.
Burg Telegraph boasts it printed the first AP dispatches on the arrival of American troops in France. The Harrisburg paper proclaims itself the only local evening publication to carry the epoch making report hours ahead of rivals.
Russian General Staff Headquarters reports that Elihu Root Major General Hugh L Scott and Russian foreign minister Tereshtenko arrived in Petrograd to confer with General Brussiloff. Scott and aides will begin a ten day tour of the southwestern front delivering addresses on American character work and discipline to Russian soldiers.
In Petrograd the Cossack Congress heard John R. Mott of the American commission describe U S war aims and pledge aid. President Cutoff affirmed U S justice in joining the war and the congress adopted a unanimous resolution for a vigorous war, rejecting a separate peace.
The general appropriation bill for state government was reduced, removing funding for farmers institutes and councillors, cutting labor and industry and public service by about $100,000 each, and eliminating the Governor's discretionary $30,000 contingent fund. The conferees added $200,000 for the State Salary Board and $200,000 for suburban Philadelphia highway construction.
Soldiers of the regular army sailors and National Guardsmen are offered free use of the Y M C A including tub and shower baths. General Secretary Robert B. Reeves announced the policy to a Rotary gathering urging the Y M C A be their headquarters and service to them in every possible way.

Rome June 28 Umberto Pugliera, naval engineer, has designed a new unsinkable cargo boat approved by the Italian ministry of marine. The Revista Maritima notes a displacement of 10 300 tons and cargo capacity of 5 800 tons. It features a double hull with the space between filled with coal and other material to shield against mines and torpedoes.
Adolph Swimer, convicted in May of threatening to kill President Wilson, was sentenced in Newark to one year and one day in the Atlanta Federal penitentiary. He worked as a farm hand.
